Increasing digital transformation is profoundly shaping societies and will continue to do so. The resulting social changes will also have an impact on nature conservation, its tasks, its goals and their implementation.

The aim of the project is to analyze the complex interrelationships and directions of impact between societal changes, digitization processes and the social significance of nature conservation and to derive recommendations for action to strengthen nature conservation concerns at the political and civil society levels.

The following research questions are to be answered:

  1. How do societal developments caused or intensified by the digital transformation processes affect the societal and political perception and discussion of nature conservation concerns?
  2. Against the background of digital transformation, what strategies are needed to strengthen nature conservation in societal debates?

The research project will be carried out in three consecutive working packages (WP):

  • In working package 1 (WP1), an extensive literature search will identify examples of societal changes caused by digitization and analyze and compile them with regard to their potential relevance for nature conservation.
  • In WP2, three examples selected on the basis of the results of WP 1 will be examined in detail by means of focus groups, individual interviews, online communities or other methods. Political recommendations for action are derived from the results.
  • In WP3, the results from WP 1 and 2 will be communicated and discussed with a wider audience of experts. The results of the discussion will be included in the final report as well as in contributions to professional journals.
