Landscapes in Germany 2030
Project title | Landscapes in Germany 2030 (Landscapes 2030) |
Funding | Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) |
Duration | 09/2009 – 12/2012 |
Research associate | Dr. Bernd Demuth Dipl.-Geogr. Wera Wojtkiewicz |
Project lead | Prof. Dr. Stefan Heiland |
Description and Results
In recent years and decades, the transformation of landscapes has been taking place at an increasing speed. This acceleration is, among other things, due to a large number of anthropogenic driving forces that must be taken into account when assessing, understanding and possibly controlling landscape change. Examples are:
- the promotion of renewable energies and the corresponding expansion of biomass cultivation, wind power and open space photovoltaic systems
- demographic change
- continuing land use for housing and transport with a simultaneous increase in the amount of urban fallow land
- the European agricultural policy with its effects on the agricultural system
- climate change with its consequences or
- the expansion of recreational and tourism infrastructure.
However, factors that have so far received little attention in landscape research, such as changes in lifestyles, could also play an increasing role in the future. In order to enhance the effectiveness of landscape governance, such influences on landscape development should be considered to a greater extent than in the past.
Against this background, the aim of the project was to identify possible future driving forces of landscape development and to assess their physical and spatial impacts on landscapes and their functions as identification space (home), habitat (for people, animals, plants) and economic space (especially tourism) in the form of scenarios.
For this purpose, three workshops were held between 2009 and 2012:
- "The Big Change" – climate change, agricultural structure change, renewable energies
- "The Silent Change" – demography, living environments, lifestyles
- "Change endured – change designed" (political and planning options for steering further landscape development)
