Description and Results
In spring 2017 the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) presented the Federal Green Infrastructure Concept (BKGI) as a nationwide concept for nature conservation. The BKGI is based on an expert report which was the result of this project. Contentwise it is based on the concept of green infrastructure as understood by the EU as well as on the target dimensions and natural assets according to § 1 German Federal Nature Conservation Act. Against this background, the report deals with the following topics:
- Natural and landscape diversity: biological diversity, diversity of landscapes, geo-ecological diversity
- Material functions of nature and landscape: natural soil fertility, protection against soil erosion, soils and ecosystems in climate change, groundwater issues
- Perceiving and experiencing nature and landscape with regard to landscapes, geoecological features, species and habitats.
In addition, the report deals with special requirements that have to be met by the Green Infrastructure in the German North and Baltic Sea, in river floodplains and in urban areas. An integrated approach provides an initial cartographic overview of areas and regions that are of particular importance for a nationwide Green Infrastructure. More so than the BKGI, the expert report addresses tasks to be pursued in the future.
The Expert report and BKGI are in particular aimed at actors at the national level, but can also serve as a basis for decisions in the federal states, regions and municipalities.
