Description and Results

The project developed indicators which summarize and illustrate complex relationships between climate change and biodiversity. The indicators are intended to support and advise politicians and other actors in decisions relevant to climate and biodiversity from a nature conservation perspective.

In a first step the project summarized and described direct and indirect effects of climate change on biological diversity and on strategies and measures aimed at the adaptation of nature conservation to climate change. In a second step indicators were identified which could be of relevance for the intended indicator set. This was based on a comprehensive analysis of already existing indicators on the national and international level. Only a few of those could be used as they address direct impacts of climate change on biological diversity, such as phenological changes and changes in areas and populations. Therefore the development of further indicators proved necessary.

The resulting set of indicators is divided into three indication areas with a total of 11 subordinate indication fields, to which individual indicators are or should be assigned.

  • Indication area I: Direct climate-change induced changes in biological diversity (phenological changes in species and communities; changes in populations, areas and biocenoses; changes in habitats)
  • Indication area II: Indirect climate-change induced changes in biological diversity (changes in biological diversity as a result of adaptation to climate change in the following areas: agriculture, forestry, water management, tourism, energy generation)
  • Indication area III: Adaptation of nature conservation strategies and measures to climate change and their success

Five indicators could be fully calculated and depicted, the first four are used for the monitoring reports on the German Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change:

  1. Phenological changes in wild plant species
  2. Climate Impact Indicator for birds
  3. Recovery of natural floodplains
  4. Consideration of climate change in landscape planning
  5. Temperature index of common nesting bird species

Another nine indicators were fully conceptualized, but could not be calculated due to missing data ("prototypes"). For all realized indicators and the prototypes, fact sheets were prepared. They contain detailed information on: contextual background, validity and suitability of the indicator, legal references and target values, calculations, data sources, spatial and temporal resolution. If possible, graphic and textual illustrations of the indicator values were also included.

Not all indication fields could be fully covered by indicators – among others due to missing data or the lack of a clear causal link between changes in climate and biological diversity. However, unrealized or not realizable indicator approaches were documented in detail as a basis for further research.
