New research project: Digital transformation, society and nature conservation


The digital transformation is changing our society enormously. Which of these changes are also important for nature conservation and the preservation of biological diversity? This is the question that the project "Effects of the digital transformation on society and the protection of biodiversity" deals with. It started in August 2020 and runs until 2023, with funding from the German Federal Ministry of the Environment and support in expertise from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation. The project team is led by the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW). The department is involved through Prof. Dr. Heiland and M.Sc. Markus Günther. At the end of October, the first meeting of the project-accompanying working group took place, at which, among other things, the social effects of digitization are particularly relevant for nature conservation and should therefore be investigated as a priority. This will be done in the next project phase on the basis of three case studies that are to be examined intensively.
