Weitblick: Episode 9 of our podcast series in german is online

Podcast "Weitblick"

With Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner, President of the German Federal Environmental Agency, we talk, among other things, about the consequences of the war in Ukraine for a global socio-ecological transformation, why international climate and environmental policy is at the same time security policy, and why double standards of the "West" towards Africa and Asia are now falling back on him.

Saving energy as the key to energy security – sufficiency as a strategy

Scientists and representatives of civil society are calling on policymakers and society to make energy sufficiency a central principle of energy policy. This means reducing our energy demand - by changes in individual and collective consumption behavior that are effective in the short term, as well as by establishing structures that foster sufficiency in the medium term. This makes our society more independent in terms of energy supply, serves climate protection and has positive side effects for landscapes and biodiversity. Many measures can already be taken in the short term and therefore have an immediate effect. The addressees are all citizens and companies, but above all political decision-makers are addressed, who are responsible for creating suitable framework conditions for a peaceful and livable future.

New version of the quality criteria for the evaluation of the German National Parks

In the next two years, the German national parks will be evaluated again after 2009-2012. Among other things, the legal, financial and personnel framework conditions of the national park work will be considered, as well as the size and undisturbed nature of the areas or educational and nature experience offers. In preparation for this, the existing set of quality criteria and standards was intensively revised in order to eliminate some weaknesses that came to light during the first evaluation. This "Version 2.0" has now been published and is also available as a free download in German and English, including all indicators and questions. Prof. Heiland supported the project as an external adviser. The project was funded by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

Myths of the ongoing environmental and climate debates

The lecture of Prof. Heiland in the context of the lecture series 'Climate Protection' of the TU Berlin is available at Youtube (in german language only).

In the current discussion about climate protection and a socio-ecological transformation, one repeatedly encounters typical arguments put forward by different sides. Since they are often used unquestioned, claim to be true and seem to have a strong fascination, they can be called myths. The lecture questions some of these myths, which revolve around topics such as renewable energies, technology, nature conservation, lifestyles, freedom, prosperity, renunciation and individual or social responsibility.
